Museum purchase, 1949.
A carved portrait from the decades just preceding the consolidation of the Republic into the Empire, this head, through its lined face and tight-lipped expression, evokes determination, experience, and pragmatism, qualities thought to epitomize the Romans’ national character. The individual depicted, whose name we do not know, must have been an important public figure, as other portraits of him are known in Paris, Naples, Rome and Nemi.
