Description:
The so-called Togate Barberini (I. 56) is an emblematic image that summarises and reflects the necessity to show, with certain exhibitionism, the high social rank held by the man portrayed as part of a patrician family. The figure is dressed in a toga, proud symbol of the Roman citizenship, imposed by Augustus as a “uniform” that had to be worn at the theatre and on any other formal occasion. The standing figure bears the images of the figure’s ancestors, his father in his left hand (20—15 BC), and his grandfather, who was depicted with a more naturalistic style (50—40 BC), in his right hand. Only the aristocratic families used to have their ancestors’ images reproduced in wax. They kept them in the halls of their houses, and they “wore” them during particular occasions, both public and private, so that their ancestors were present, too. The head of the statue is not the original one; it was added during a restoration overseen by the Barberini family that took place in the seventeenth century.
