Posthumous portrait of Augustus.

Italian fine-grained marble.
1st—2nd centuriues CE.
Inv. No. 99.344.

Boston, Museum of Fine Arts.

Origin:
Henry Lillie Pierce Fund.
Description:
Augustus, first emperor of Rome, died in A.D. 14, but his exalted status and his deification ensured that portraits would be made after his death. The Boston MFA dates this image to the 1st or 2nd centuries A.D. /CE, and notes that the thick, "plastik" hairstyle is characteristic of the Hadrianic period (second century).
