Portrait of Vespasian.

Marble. Ca. 70 CE.
Inv. No. 2585.

Copenhagen, New Carlsberg Glyptotek
(Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek)

Description:
Marble Roman portrait of the Emperor Vespasian, first of the Flavian emperors. (reign: 69-79 CE). He was 60 years old when he came to power (born in 9 CE); the sculptor has emphasized his age and experience, very probably a reference to hallowed Republican tradition, as in this example from the Capitoline Museums in Rome (inv. 2433).

Said to be from Naples; dated to ca. 70 CE.
