Bone. Ca. 235250 CE.
Inv. No. GR 1898.7-15.2, Gem 3952.

London, The British Museum

Description:
This tiny (6 cm or 23/8" in. high) bust, carved in bone, of an unknown Roman in military dress dates to ca. 235-250 CE (according to the British Museum; inv. GR 1898.7-15.2; Gem 3952). The turn of the head and the short, no-nonsense military hairstyle is closely parallel to the portraiture of the emperor Caracalla.
