Pliny the Elder
NATURAL HISTORY
BOOK II

(Translation, commentary and concluding remarks by B. A. Starostin)

The Russian translation of the second book of Pliny the Elders Natural History is published for the first time. The book deals with the general laws and regularities of the Universe, with the movements and the form of the Earth and the order of the celestial and terrestrial movements. In the concluding remarks, the connection of Plinys biological worldview with his natural-philosophic ideas is reviewed. His general worldview is akin to the Stoik one, and at the same time, Pliny never rejects the search for the human sense in every phenomenon.
