Craterus, king Antigonus Gonatass brother

The purpose of this work is to collect testimonies of the ancient sources which mention Craterus (was born ca. 321 B. C.), the half-brother of Macedonian king Antigonus II Gonatas. Special attention is given to the question of the possible political status of Craterus.

Corinth was under the control of Craterus from the end of the 280s or the beginning of the 270s B. C. (Epicur. Epist. Frag. 42. v. 911. Arrighetti). The zone of his responsibility as a whole was Isthmus and Peloponnese (Plut. Moral. 253a; Polyaen. II. 29. 1). The widespread view that Craterus controlled Peiraieus and some Euboean cities (e. g. Chalcis and Eretria) seems to be unconvincing because no sources ever mention it.

It is probable that Crateras was a strategos. The information provided by Plutarchus (Moral. 253a; 486a) shows the military character of his power. However, the actual status of Craterus was higher than that of others strategoi who supervised external possessions of Antigonus Gonatas, which was caused by their close family relations.
