Tarentines cavalry in the Hellenistic armies

The Tarentines cavalry had Italian origins since the mid-V B. C. They were armed with javelins and shields. In theoretical Tacticae of Aelian and Arrian the Tarentines were light cavalry employing long-distance fighting. During the campaign, the Tarentines played the role of a real light cavalry. For first time, in historical sources the Tarentines .117 appeared in Antigonus Monophtalmus army in 317 B. C. (Diod. XIX. 29. 2). During the end of the IVII B. C. the Tarentines were quite common in the Hellenistic world. The body of the Tarentines was divided into the detachments of 100 cavalrymen and the latter into three detachments, each of them had about 30 horses. A Tarentine might have two horses (Liv. XXXV. 28. 8).
