NEW EPIGRAPHICAL MONUMENTS FROM A ROMAN TEMPLE IN THE ENVIRONS OF CHERSONESUS TAURICA
V. M. Zubar, O. Ya. Savelya, T. Sarnovsky

In 1996 the ruins of a Roman temple of Jupiter Dolichenus were discovered on the territory of Balaklava. Fragments of a dedicatory inscription to Jupiter Dolichenus were extracted from a building trench in the temple portico. In the cell of the temple, in situ, were found: an inscribed pedestal of a statue of Hercules, an altar dedicated to Vulcanus, lower parts of two limestone columns, one of which was decorated with ivy sprouts. Nearby, also in situ, two rectangular limestone slabs standing on legs were found. Below the level of the pedestal of Hercules statue there were discovered two more rectangular slabs, broken during the destruction of the temple, with dedications to Jupiter Dolichenus and images of masks on them, fragments of a statue and sculpture images, reliefs, fragments of tile with Latin stamps, ceramical pieces, etc. The NE wall of the temple has not yet been excavated, so its fuller description is still to come.

The excavations unearthed five inscriptions. One of them says that the temple dedicated to Jupiter the Best and Most High Dolichenus. (Jovi Optimo Maximo Dolicheno) was restored by soldiers of Lower Moesia vexillation commanded by Antonius Valens, a military tribune of the Ist Italic Legion, with the help of Novius Ulpianus, a centurion of the same legion. Side faces of two sacrificial tables also bore the name of Jupiter Dolichenus. Another inscription was carved on the pedestal of Hercules statue. It allows to conclude that the statue was dedicated to Hercules for the well-being of Emperor Antoninus Augustus and Marcus Aurelius Caesar by Antonius Valens, a tribune of the Ist Italic Legion, with the help of the same Novius Ulpianus. The last inscription was carved on the altar dedicated to Vulcanus by Antonius Proclus, centurion of the XI Claudian Legion, ex voto.

Epigraphic as well as some other evidence make it possible to regard the discovered temple as the sanctuary of the Roman garrison stationed here in the 2nd half of the 2nd century A. D. At present it can be maintained that on the territory of Balaklava quite a numerous Roman garrison was stationed, which can be associated, besides the temple, with the remains of some 2nd3rd centuries buildings.
