Arina Bragova (Nizhny Novgorod State University of Linguistics). The Ethical Aspect of Old Age in Ciceros Assessment

The article dwells upon the ethical component of the phenomenon of old age in Ciceros assessment (on the basis of the treatise Cato Major de senectute). Expressing the view of old age Cicero uses the concept mos / mores and makes a conclusion that the reason for misfortunes of old age is not age itself but bad customs. Cicero bases his arguments about old age on a synthesis of Greco-Roman ethical concepts, and his innovation as a philosopher consists in such eclecticism.

Keywords: Cicero, Ancient Rome, ethical aspect, old age, mos, mores, ancestors customs, virtus, virtuous.
