FROM THE LIFE OF THE ITALIAN COLLEGIA
by M. Ye. Sergeyenko

The inscription containing the statutes of the Lanuvian funeral collegium (CIL XIV 2112), dated A. D. 133, is interesting as a document which illuminates the life of the poor (tenuiores) members of this collegium in both moral and material respects: 1) these are people of modest means, but by no means beggars; 2) the moral level, though not at all high among the bulk of the membership (populus), was high among those who drew up the statutes; 3) the collegium secures to its members the inviolability of the money contributed by them to the collegium till; the depositors are free to dispose of this money by will.

This is by no means a funeraticium, as Wallon and Waltzing thought: (a) the sum in this case was so small as barely to pay for a funeral; (b) it is definitely stipulated in the collegium statutes that the funeraticium (less exequiarium and commoda) was paid out to a person who had puried a collegium member whose death occurred far away from Lanuvium. On the one hand members of the collegium willed their savings to whomever they liked, on the other hand slaves and freedmen (the largest contingent of the membership)  if they were Latini Juniani  had no right to make a will (for those set free manumissione iusta this right was also limited). The inscription provides a good illustration of the open scissors gap which existed in Rome between the letter of the law and real life.
