The combination of Apollo with the theme of naval victory immediately brings Actium to mind. In fact, two rostral columns had been decreed by the Senate in Octavian’s honour, one for the victory over Sextus Pompey at Naulochus in 36 BC, the other for the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium.181 The former was located in the Forum, the latter on the Palatine in the piazza before the temple of Apollo.182 The evidence would strongly suggest that the depiction on this denarius is of the Actian column and as such it would complement the type of the arch appearing on no. 422.
