Description:
Pliny (Nat. Hist. XXXIV, 79) refers to a bronze group, by Leochares, portraying Ganymede being carried off by the eagle sent by Zeus. He remarks that the eagle, tenderly grasping the young man by his clothes so as not to harm him, seems well aware of the identity of both the abducted and the abductor. The grandiose, mid-4th century B.C. work by Leochares here appears as the ornamental motif of what was once a table leg, the work of Roman copyists of the 2nd century A.D.
