“A course was marked out for them from the turning point, and they all sped swiftly, raising the dust of the plain.” (Homer, Od. VIII, 120—122, trans. A. T. Murray). From left to right, we see four athletes with their legs raised high, arms bent close to the body and fists clenched, in the prolonged sprint of the diaulos (double stade) or the dolichos (middle distance). The two behind, whose stride is longer, are trying to catch up with the two runners in front. A fine composition in which the first pair of runners complements the second, both as regards the position of the torso and the arms and in the movement of the legs. Pseudo-Panathenaic amphora: it bears no inscription.
