Temple of Antoninus and Faustina. Reconstruction.

Painter: J. F. Menager (1783—1864).
Watercolour. 1809.

Paris, National Fine Arts High School.

Rome, Roman Forum.
Description:
A young French architect J.-F. Menager, a grant-holder of French Academy, carried out the excavations of the temple of Antoninus and Faustina. He cleared the foundations of columns and the stairs of the building and also accomplished its reconstruction, which was, to say a truth, rather ideal than archeologically precise.
This drawing of facade contains a number of inaccuracies; for example, the picture of the apotheosis of Antoninus and Faustina on the pediment is fictitious and taken from the base of the column of Antoninus Pius.
