English A prince of the Julio-Claudian family

This exquisite portrait of marble from the Greek islands shows a young man with his head slightly reclined to the left. It may have belonged to an idealized portrait statue, a replica of an athletic or heroic model.

The subject is probably Nero Caesar (6—29 CE), the eldest son of Germanicus, nephew of Tiberius. After the premature death of his father and brother, for a short time Nero was heir designate to the throne, but was then exiled together with his mother, Agrippina the Elder, and nothing more was known about him.

Il bel ritratto in marmo greco insulare restituisce il volto di un giovane dal capo lievemente reclinato a sinistra, forse pertinente ad una statua di tipo ideale, replica di un modello atletico o eroico. In esso sembra probabilmente riconoscersi il maggiore dei figli di Germanico, nipote dell’imperatore Tiberio: Nerone Cesare (6—29 d.C.), per breve tempo candidato alla successione al trono dopo le morti premature del padre e del fratello, ma nel 29 d.C. colpito da una condanna all’esilio insieme alla madre Agrippina maggiore e di lì a poco scomparso.
