Zeus on his quadriga striking the Giants with lightning.

Cameo. Niccolite. 3rd—2nd century BCE.
Signature: ΑΘΗΝΙΩΝ (Athenion).
Inv. No. 25848.

Naples, National Archaeological Museum
(Napoli, Museo archeologico nazionale).

Private collection, Farnese.
Origin:
From the Farnese collection. Formerly in the collection of Fulvio Orsini (inv. no. 325), bought this cameo “from a soldier”, according to inventory.
Description:
The engraver Athenion, whose signature appears on this cameo, also signed another one with a similar Athena on a quadriga. Its vigorous and baroque style, as well as its Hellenistic political propagandists motifs, suggest a date between the 3rd and 2nd century B.C.
