Leopard from Northern Portico.
The house of Dionysus. Late 2nd century CE.
Paphos, Archaeological Park.
Description:
A leopard advances rather sedately, holding in its mouth the head of the unfortunate creature [onager]. This rather unpleasant and gruesome scene was, quite surprisingly, a popular element in Roman decoration and is found in several mosaics in other parts of the Roman world.
