Description:
After a room with a simple earthen floor we come to a very effective geometric mosaic. It consists of four rows of four panels, each containing a different geometric pattern. All the patterns used are well known and quite standard to the Roman decorative vocabulary. They owe their effect here to the beautiful colour scheme and the fact that they are exhibited all together like a page from a sample book. This kind of decoration, known as “a decor multiple” was very common in the western Roman provinces, particularly in France, and it is only rarely found among eastern mosaics.
