(Roma, Museo dell’Ara Pacis).
Description:
On the external side of the south crowning slab, the best preserved portion of the frieze shows instead a procession with three animals, with two bovids and a sheep, being led to sacrifice by twelve bare-chested victimarii with the typical limus knotted around their hips. In their hands they carry the sacrificial instruments: the trays, the knife, the club and the laurel branch for the aspersion. They are headed by a man clad in a toga (perhaps a priest) and by two apparitores with their rods. Two assistants to the cult open and close the procession.
