Tomb III. Peristyle.
Hellenistic period (3rd—1st centuries BCE).
Cyprus.
Cyprus.
Paphos, Tombs of the Kings.
Description:
The tomb is entered through a covered staircase consisting of 12 steps. On the right side of the staircase a burial niche is carved out of the rock. The flight of steps leads down to a square peristyle court. As we enter, we face on our left the well-preserved Doric entablature with its triglyphs and metopes. The peristyle communicates with the burial chamber, hewn out of the rock at the west and provided with a large number of loculi. Opposite the burial chamber is another rectangular chamber which is entered through a decorated doorway. It was used most probably for ritual purposes. The east and south porticoes were destroyed and pieces of the rock are still lying on the southern part of the court floor.
