Tomb VII (“Old church”). Atrium.

Hellenistic period (3rd—1st centuries BCE).
Cyprus.

Paphos, Tombs of the Kings.

Description:
The fourth tomb with a peristyle court is known as “Palioeklisha” (Old church). This tomb is well preserved although its east and north porticoes have collapsed. It is accessible through a stepped dromos which was originally covered by rock, with seven steps. After the steps, the dromos slopes downwards to the entrace. On the sides of the dromos five niches and a loculus carved out of the rock were used for burials. The entablature of this tomb is well preserved and the interior surface retains most of the stucco (plastering) which originally covered the whole tomb. The well is dug in the southeast corner under the portico. One of the two large burial chambers is situated just opposite the entrance and has five loculi and four niches. Its doorway was decorated with relief cornices. The second burial chamber opens to the north portico and is provided with nine loculi. The doorway retains its magnificent relief decoration. An additional loculus was carved in the northeast corner of the atrium.
