Origin:
From Asia Minor?
Description:
50. Emperor Valerianus
Caius Publius Licinius Valerianus (born c. 190, emperor 253—260) wears a round wreath. A comparison with numismatic portraits ensures the identity of Valerian. He has thin mutton-chop whiskers and a small moustache. For the time being, this is one of the only extant portraits of this older man with the very sturdy skull and the prominent chin. A portrait in Rome in the Capitoline Museum (Fittschen-Zanker I, no. III) depicts a Roman Valerian.
I. N. 3387
Head. White marble with yellowish brown patina.
H. 0.42 m.
The nose has broken off and is missing. The crown and the back of the head are roughly carved.
Acquired 1966 from a private Parisian collection. Allegedly comes from Asia Minor (along with 51).
