11. The tragic poet Sophocles.
The present portrait of Sophocles is of the Farnese type, of which there are known to be about forty copies. The determination of Sophocles as being the subject of this portrait type has been ensured through an inscription upon a similar portrait in the Vatican. The original has been dated from shortly after the dramatic poet’s death in 406 B.C. up until the Hellenistic period. The more recent dating seems to be more plausible. Due to the present condition of the copy, it has been difficult to determine precisely when it was fabricated. Nevertheless, in all probability, the copy dates from the end of the 1st cent. A.D.
