Description:
This character in the background, with her forefinger on her lips in a gesture of respectful silence, has recently been interpreted (La Rocca 2002) as an allusion to Drusus’ death in 9 BC, the year when the altar was completed. The veiled woman would therefore represent a moving post eventum homage to the untimely death of the young soldier.
