Description:
North procession, detail of slab north 4. The adults depicted, faceless, could be Augustus’ sister, Octavia Minor (north 39), while the man clad in a toga (north 41), could either be Iulius Antonius, son of the triumvirate Mark Anthony, or Marcus Appuleius. The girl could be Julia Minor (north 40), born in 19 BC from Julia and Marcus Agrippa. She became famous for her love for luxury, her debauchery and for her being, perhaps, the indirect cause of Ovid’s exile. She died in AD 28 while she was trying to escape from one of the Tremiti islands where Augustus had relegated her in AD 8. Her mortal remains were not allowed to be entombed in the mausoleum of the Julio-Claudii.
