Portrait of a priest.

Marble.
117—138 CE.
Inv. No. L.2007.8.5.

New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art (on loan).

Private collection.
Origin:
On loan from the collection of Shelby White and Leon Levy.
Description:
Roman marble portrait of a priest. Note the headpiece with a raised, round diadem in the center of a rolled fillet. The museum suggests that the garb of the figure indicates that he is a priest of the (imported Egyptian) god Serapis. Dated to the Hadrianic Period (A.D. 117-138).
