Origin:
Found in 1722 in the waters of Meloria off the coast of Livorno.
Description:
This portrait bust was found in 1722 in the waters of Meloria off the coast of Livorno, along with another three (of Homer, Sophocles and a still unidentified personage). Deemed ancient by most of the experts and considered to be bronze replicas from the Flavian period of Greek originals of different epochs, the busts have recently been identified as Renaissance reproductions of Roman copies, of which they repeat even the modern restoration.
