Origin:
From Tivoli (?). Entered the Hermitage collection in 1850 fron Tzarskoye Selo. Was acquired in 1826 from Lebzelter (?).
Description:
The composite work was created by the artist and restorer Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). It was assembled of an ancient Roman puteal and a handle of a vessel of the 1st cent. BC with the rest parts as new additions. In 1769 G. B. Piranesi had acquired some ancient fragments found at the site of Hadrian’s villa in Tivoli and has assembled several vases of them imitating the Roman classics.
