Description:

78. Valentinian I

In all probability, Flavius Valentinianus I (c. 321—375), Roman emperor 364—375, can be recognized in this portrait on the basis of coins and by way of comparison with a diadem-adorned bronze head from Ponte Sisto in Rome. The hair over the forehead is combed down in long uniform locks; the eyes are most expressive.

The portrait bears the jewelled golden diadem, a sign of dignity for the emperor that came into being along with Constantine the Great’s twentieth anniversary in 325/26.

H. 0.30 m.

The nose has been struck off, the right cheek is damaged. A large piece of the diadem is missing, as well the left cheek, the lower part of the face and a large section of the back of the head.

Acquired 1895 in Rome, through the mediation of Helbig. Possibly identical with Matz-Duhn, Antike Bildwerke in Rom I (1881) no. 1933.
