Description:
Room 27. Room 27 in the Augustan age was a living room. With the later construction, in the Claudian age, of the great lower peristyle, it was reduced to an exceedingly narrow corridor. Decorated in the Third Style, it showed above a black socle a yellow, compartmented zone with candelabra and a small central scene.

Provenance: Castellammare di Stabia, Varano hill, Villa San Marco, Room 27.

Pictured against the wall’s yellow background, is a small temple on a stepped base and a small window to the left, with a jutting-out architrave and a pediment with acroteria.

A silhouetted offer-bearer walks towards the temple, shouldering a knapsack. Before the temple is a sacred column, with votive offers (shield, lance, bandage, thyrsus), while on its right is an altar with other offerings, as well as a short palisade, behind which is a leafy tree.

The vignette, painted with delicate brush strokes, falls within the idyllic-sacred genre (see a similar subject from Pompeii, W insula or city block, inv. 20608).
