Description:
Unknown Roman
The facial expression of this Roman private portrait recalls that of Trajan. With its thinlipped mouth, taut skin and hollow cheeks, this depiction of an unknown Roman is more ascetic and severe than that of the emperor. Such stylisations are typical of private portraits of this period. Even child portraits have an earnest facial expression.
