Description:
The inscription ΚΟΡΝΗΛΙΑΣ / ΑΝΤΩΝΙΑΣ engraved on the plinth identifies this female figure as Cornelia Antonia. The woman wears a long tunic and a himation (mantle) wrapping her body. The folds of the mantle highlight the sinuous posture of the body supported by the right leg, while the left is gently folded back. The arms are clearly visible beneath the himation; her right arm, close to the chest, is bent toward the face and the hand is leant on the left shoulder; her left arm is lowered along her body while the hand holds the hem of the mantle. The elegant woman’s posture is carved according to the classical taste. The face slightly turned to the right and the rendering of her features — eyes, nose and mouth — are a successful attempt of customizing the style of the portrait.
