Al centro una donna, accovacciata su un podio e con il copricapo di paglia, offre acqua a un mendico, caratterizzato da una corta tunica bianca.
Traveller and sorceress, from Pompeii, House of the Dioscuri (VI, 9, 6)
inv. 9106
The fragment comes from a longer frieze in the landscape genre which embellished the side panels of one of the walls of the tablinum in the house. In front of a reed hut a woman distinguished by the typical conical straw hat (tholia) of the Hellenistic tanagrines is seated on a cylindrical pedestal and offers a drink to a wayfarer; while his dog waits patiently.
This miniature, executed in the rapid daubs of the so-called “impressionistic” technique, exudes a faintly exotic fascination.
