20. Roman Woman
The face and neck of this handsome woman are framed by curls, with a garland of tiny curls above the forehead and a large number of curls beneath the ears. Several identities have been proposed: Julia Paula, Elagabalus’ wife, or his mother, Julia Soaemias, but no certain determination is possible.
c. 220.
I. N. 825
Bust. White marble with light reddish-brown patina.
H. 0.45 m.
The tip of the nose has been repaired in marble. The edge of the bust has been damaged. The formation of the neck would suggest that the head has been placed on a draped statue.
Acquired 1892 from Eliseo Borghi in Rome, through the mediation of Helbig.
