L. Curtius designated this older man with the lean and furrowed face as being Appius Claudius Pulcher (died in 48 B.C.) (RM 54 (1939) 128). As Schweitzer has indicated, there are certain similarities to the Caesar portrait. F. Poulsen considered the portrait to be antique, while V. Poulsen saw it as a forgery. But there is no reason for suspicion.

Most of the nose has broken off. The right ear has suffered a great deal of damage. The edge of the neck is battered. The neck has been elaborated for the purpose of being placed into a statue.
Acquired in 1889 from Marinangeli in Rome, through the mediation of Helbig. Presumably from Frascati.
