Description:
The so-called “Great Artemis” shows one of the main features typical of the statues of the Ephesian Artemis: the tapered body covered on the torso by six animal bands. The representations of animals (including lions, bulls, goats, griffins, and sphinxes) on her dress, make clear that Artemis’s identity as mistress of the wild animals, or Potnia Theron, is emphasized here.
