A Greek gold, enamel and garnet Herakles knot
Hellenistic period, circa 4th-3rd century B. C.From a necklace or girdle, the knot with a central circular garnet set within beaded and twisted wire filigree, the bands of the knot decorated with beaded wire filigree foliate scrolls and rosette, dotted buds filled with dark, light blue and purple enamel, the centre of the knot decorated with four separately applied rosettes and two scrolling palmettes, with remains of green and purple enamel, the collars decorated with band of tongues with dark blue and green enamel, below a band of scrolling twisted wire filigree, the corners with scrolling half palmettes with green and purple enamel, hinged either side with a rounded terminal decorated with large and small twisted wire filigree palmettes with green, dark blue and purple enamel, two loops for suspension, together with a length of loop-in-loop chain.
Knot 4½ in. (11.4 cm.) wide.
