Origin:
The bust was bought in Rome in 1798-99 by Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, and shipped to Constantinople to decorate the residence of the British ambassador. In 1803 it was shipped to Broomhall House in Scotland, seat of the Earls of Elgin. Sold by Elgin’s descendants in 2012 at auction in New York to a private collector. Acquired by Getty Museum in 2021.
