Inv. No. 546.

Florence, Uffizi Gallery
(Firenze, Galleria degli Uffizi).

Description:
The head has been abundantely restored in the neck area and set on a bust that is part Classical and germane (white marble) and part post-ancient (onyx). The sitter’s facial features and the presence of a several tight curls between the temples and the ears achieved with a single stroke of the drill initially prompted scholars to identify it as a youthful portrait of Agrippina the Elder. More recent scholarship, however, has concluded that it is in fact a portrait of Antonia the Younger (36 BCE-37 CE), the daughter of Mark Anthony, the wife of Drusus the Elder and the mother of Germanicus, of the future Emperor Claudius (41 BCE-54 CE) and of Livilla.
