Provenance: in the Uffizi since at least the early 18th century.
This head was damaged in a fire that broke out in the Gallery’s third corridor in August 1762. Identified in the 1780s as a portrait of Alcibiades, a famous mid-5th century BC Athenian politician and military commander, the effigy was subsequently completed with its present modem bust. More recently, it has been associated with a portrait of a boxer in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in Copenhagen, itself considered a Roman replica of a bronze portrait of the Greek athlete Polydamas of Skotoussa (5th century BC) cast by Lysippus in around 337 BC for a statue in his honour in Olympia.
