Origin:
From the Farnese collection. Formerly in the collection of Fulvio Orsini (inv. no. 34), bought this cameo from sister of Horatio de’ Marj.
Description:
It is a moot point whether the Apollonios whose signature appears on this magnificent gem, depicting Artemis dressed as a hunter, with lowered torches, is also the author of a granate from Kerc, in Crimea, with a portrait of Asandros, a king of Ponto of the second half of the 1st century B.C. As the letters are somewhat different and rather worn, it might be another artist. At all events, this work, in which the softness of the Hellenistic contours harmonises with the terse language of the Augustan age, is probably to be dated in the same period as the other one, which it resembles in style as well.
