Description:
The myth of Europa abducted by Zeus in the form of a bull is here given a new interpretation with respect to the traditional one set at sea. In a sacred setting disposed round a column to which clings a twisted tree and opening out into a mountain landscape full of trees and strange rocks with steps cut into them, the group of the bull bearing the girl has a majestic air, attaining a kind of triumphal stateliness. The girl has a far-off look with a hint of pride in her bearing, while three companions are seeing her off, one of whom is caressing the bull.
The Greek original from which this work derives dates from the end of the fourth century B.C.
