Attributed by the engraver Dioskourides.
Inv. No. 26051.

Naples, National Archaeological Museum
(Napoli, Museo archeologico nazionale).

Private collection, Medici.
Origin:
From the Medici collection.
Description:
This intaglio (unfortunately broken in 1972) has been attributed to the famous Dioskourides, Augustus’ favourite engraver and the author of Caesar’s portrait. The quality of the stone and of its workmanship make it one of the best pieces in the Medici collection. It represents the myth of the famous competition between Apollo and Marsyas, that ended in the satyr’s torture and death, in spite of young Olympus’s pleading.
