Origin:
The bust was found in Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey) around 1700 and was transported to France by Pontchartrain, who was then Minister of the Navy and later Chancellor. He also ordered a bronze copy of the bust to Girardon, and this copy was seen and described by Montfaucon in his “Antiquities” (vol. III), who was apparently unaware of the existence of the original. The second bronze copy belongs to the Earl of Pembroke and located in the Wilton House.
After the death of the Chancellor in 1747, the marble was acquired by the Duke of Valentinois, and after his death in 1751, it was transferred to the Royal Museum collection by will.
