Excavated 1894—1895. North exedra-pinacotheca, panel above door in south wall.
Description:
Pan, half-man, half goat, comes upon Hermaphroditus from behind, thinking he/she is a Maenad but discovers he/she is both male and female. Hermaphroditus is reclining in the same gesture of “erotic repose” adopted by Ariadne in the center picture on this wall. His/her left arm leans on a tympanum. Pan lifts one of Hermaphroditus’ cloaks. He registers his surprise by raising his right arm while he hold the pedum in his left.
