Description:
The three pictures from the same cubiculum (the others are Europa riding the bull, described next, and Hercules and Nessus, also in the Museum) share the same calm, majestic atmosphere and the presence of a landscape in which the human and animal figures take their place with great naturalness. Here it is the pine, sacred to Pan, which dominates the scene of the musical contest between the rustic god and one of the nymphs in a solemn and rarefied atmosphere.
