THE ROMAN GODS ACCORDING TO AULUS GELLIUS
I. L. Mayak

Aulus Gellius was not a specialist in Roman religion. But his Noctes Atticae contain a great deal of information about ancient Rome, including sacral life, i. e. about deities, cults, priests collegia. The author of the article considers the first of the questions enumerated above. Aulus Gellius draws his knowledge about gods first of all from priests books, works of Varro, annalist Gnaeus Gellius, poet Ennius, comedy writers Plautus and Licinius Imbrex; he uses works by P. Nigidius Figulus though he does not make any references to the latters writings in connection with the problem discussed in the article. Gellius is familiar with Etruscan and Chaldean sacral rites, etc. However, he does not mention Christ or foreign gods with the exception of Greek ones, whom he calls by their respective Latin names. .272 His list of Roman gods consists of over 30 names. Among them there are both ancient local Italian gods, some of whom are completely forgotten and not mentioned elsewhere, and gods worshiped by the Roman and identified with local deities. Thus Nodes Atticae reflect the development of Roman perceptions of gods through the centuries from the beginning of the archaic period up to the time of the authors life. It is done on a very solid basis with precise references to sources. The work by Gellius makes it possible to come up with the original list of Roman deities and trace the penetration of foreign elements thereinto.
